As the Muslim world starts fasting yesterday, this article idea came to my mind. Many people go on special forms of diet in order to reduce weight; these diet plans sometimes include some form of fasting. Let me give you the simple definition of fasting before we go on with the topic of discussion today.

Fasting is primarily an act of willing abstinence or reduction from certain or all food, drink, or both, for a period of time. Many people fastĀ  as a religious observance.

So, staying without food for some well-planned period of time (fasting) helps reduce weight. This should not come to you as a surprise because we all have, at one time noticed loss of weight in people who have just completed fasting. We even joked with people that did not show significant weight loss by questioning them if they truly took part in the fasting.

1. Fasting makes you live longer

Sounds funny right? One would wonder — how could deprivation of foods and drinks help someone live longer? Well, it is hard to believe but the lesser you eat, the longer you live. Some studies have been able to prove that diet of some people in some cultures helped them live longer. Their diet plan simply involved eating less, embracing some intermittent fasting and this we can do too.

You would recall that we talked about the factors that cause early aging and foods that help slow it down. When we age, the rate of metabolism in our body reduces and digestive system slows down in its activities too. The lesser we eat, the lesser load we put on the weak digestive system. Embracing some fasting will help give some rest to the digestive system.
