1. Suya and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)

You know when they say Cigarette kills? It is majorly due to the PAHs they contain. Many Suya sellers make their Suya by burning all sort of woods and charcoal to make their fire. Some even throw in such things as plastics to make their ember burn brighter in order to cook the Suya meat. Many of these materials burning under the meat contain these Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons — and do you know what these PAHs do in the body after enough consumption or exposure?

  1. Some PAHs are chemical carcinogens (cancer-causing compounds) while seven PAH compounds have also been classified as probable human carcinogens.
  2. Some PAH compounds are mutagens. Mutagen is a physical or chemical agent that changes the genetic material (DNA).
  3. According to a finding, reported in an article on health.usnews.com, high prenatal exposure to PAH is associated with lower IQ and childhood asthma.

  1. I sincerely appreciate your efforts in trying to educate us on the dangers associated with suya. If one is not informed, he will be deformed. And when one is informed and he refuses to apply it, he is doomed already. Thanks and God bless you. Is their also a way one can prepare this “suya” by himself without going to the suya vendor’s?

  2. Nice job but I still see the need to educate the people doing the suya. They should be enlightened & also be taught alternative ways of generating heat in order to cook it.

  3. Thanks for the information, ALSO is good to add that SUYA made up of a free radicals of Low Density Lipoproteins (LDL) which is bad cholesterol which causes cardiovascular disease to human, block the arteries in the body. Thanks

    In addition,’suya’ may contain saturated fat- low density lipoprotein(bad cholesterol) which is deposited in d inner walls of d arteries nd causes a disease called ‘arterechlorosis’ which may later leads 2 heart attack.

My friend,Enough of your so called theories.We are Africans & suya is our tasty delicacy.Look preach from now till Jesus comes back from heaven,We will never stop eating Suya.Its just too delicious to avoid.So many people who ate it in the past generation did not die because they ate it.I’m sure I ‘ll not die because of its aroma.SUYA EATING,Must continue in Nigeria.I am proud of Suya.Buy yours today & feel the taste.Thanks.UP SUYA!.

  7. I sincerely appreciate your post. Gone are those days we hv a popular saying of “what you don’t know can never kill u”. I also advice that pple shuld learn how detoxify their system @ least once in 3 months

  8. Though you tried to inform the puplic on the outcome of your study but you failed to give us details of your researc methodology. Is from this that we would be able to assesses the applicability of you outcome. The beef burger yo eat and roast chicken or beef fall into this categories. Am of the opinion that detail report is given on this type of topic.

  10. Even though this article is informative, it fails to give full accounts of the risks associated with consuming Suya. a high percentage of Nigerians are exposed to the great danger of eating Suya as it is consumed by all classes of people.

    Eating Suya can be more dangerous than smoking. Generally, meat consumption is not totally safe. meat is prone to many infections of which most can be killed by prolong heating(cooking). nutritionists will recommend Fish and other sea foods as these are more nutritious and safer. Suya is “half done” meat, that is, the heat being applied in the preparation of Suya is not enough to kill….

Good research I’d say… But sorry… Bad title, bad motive… How can you say… Reasons why you should stop eating suya… You would have been more helpful and researchful if you tried something like “ways to make better suya”…”guide to identifying well prepared suya”… Sorry bro suya has come to stay… The info is most likely correct… But u aimed at ending the great agelong suya…. Sorry once again… Bad move

  13. Nice one! But the more knowledge we have the more unsafe we become. Old people eat this without any knowledge and live longer but with all this research all we get is cancer, ebola, sars etc Ogaaaaa o.

  14. Is it a vegan that wrote this article or an animal rights activist who hates seeing cows slaughtered?? We love suya and can’t stop eating it because of this article. Rather we would devise means of making it safer..

KNOWLEDGE LEADS TO MODERNITY AND MODERNITY LEADS TO MADNESS.PLS ,THIS IS BAD INFORMATION,BAD MOVE.THE ONLY THING IS HYGIENE HENCE ITS ADVISABLE TO EAT IT WHEN ITS SERIOUSLY HOT.M/WL CAUSES OF HEART ATTACK OR STROKE ARE BLOOD CLOTTING, OBESITY ,LACK OF OXYGEN TO D BRAIN TO MENTION FEW RATHER THAN SUYA.ITS A MOVE TO STAGNATE OUR ECONOMY.PLS TALK MORE ABOUT HYGIENE.

  17. Suya is not a nice food to eat.
    Meat made from cow and goat or sheep as suya, whether roasted or cooked or fried, are alright and nice to be eaten. But where it becomes dangerous is when it is not properly washed. Suya which is sold in the streets still contain blood.
    The Bible commanded us never to eat blood or meat that has blood in them.
